You may have noticed that this website is totally different!

We are currently building up this new Internet presence to not only inform you of the latest Hub and Back Alley Bikes news and upcoming events, but also provide a place to share bicycle knowledge and have FUN!

Eventually, our shop's bicycle registry system will be hooked into this website:  this will allow you to post photos of your bicycle and look at other people's as well.

We will also be posting many of the educational materials that we use in our classes and summer programs.

Thanks for visiting, and please stay tuned for the latest in Detroit Internet-Enabled Bicycle Technology.

Winter update! PDF Print E-mail

Following is an abridged version of our winter newsletter:

While some cyclists may already be in deep hibernation, the crew at The Hub is still rolling strong.  We have been working hard in the past few weeks--partially because we have to keep warm (we are still getting the furnace fixed), but mostly because we want to bring Detroiters the best cycling resources possible!

Before we get into the shop-update nitty-gritty, here's some exciting news from the cycling-advocacy front:

Together with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, we are in the beginning stages of running a bicycle repair program at the EarthWorks urban farm on the east side.  During the next few months, a team of Hub volunteers and Capuchin program participants will be building up a small shop to run a repair drop-in and maintenance class program.  As time goes on, we will surely need some helping hands.  Stay tuned.

Winter Riding (or not) Spectacular PDF Print E-mail

We have some new products in for those of you who will be pedaling through Detroit's slushy avenues this cold season (or maybe just looking at your bike inside in wait for springtime):

Leonardo Bike HangerThe Delta Leonardo Single Bike Wall Hook - $14.99

We all love to talk about how the cold won't affect how much we ride but we all know it will. With the Leonardo at least all the time your bike spends inside won't be spent tripping you and getting in the way. Keep your bike safe, keep yourself safe, get it out of the hallway and up on the wall.

Mt Borah Skull CapBorah Skull Cap $15.00

Its as simple as this: you risk losing enough of your body riding your bike around those menacing cars, so don't risk losing your ears from riding in the cold.  The fabric is thin enough to comfortably fit underneath your helmet.  Doubles as a fake shower cap, and also makes you look bald from a distance.  Reflective logo and stitching.

THE HUB OF DETROIT LIKES YOUR FINGERS

Please don't be stupid, wear gloves when it's cold.

PI Gavia glovesPearl Izumi Gavia Gloves - $39.99

Available in men's S-L and women's XS-L. With a zipper on the cuff rather than velcro these gloves won't feel lumpy around your wrists under your coat sleeves.

Made of a neoprene-feeling fabric that flexes with your hands and wrists, so as not to impede circulation.

The Am-Fib fabric layer is windproof and water resistant, which makes these gloves surprisingly comfortable in a wide range of temperatures.

DeFeet DuragloveDeFeet Duraglove - $15.00

Available in universal S-L sizes. Inexpensive but very warm, simple and easy to pack, enough said.
