It’s been awhile since our last update, and part of the reason for that is because there have been some exciting things going on around the campus here!
Volunteer opportunities on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm-8pm show no sign of letting up and a lot of awesome folks have been showing up, helping accomplish awesome tasks like signage and space for our newly minted volunteer information board, as well as some freshly labeled boxes for all the allen wrenches to return to at the end of the night.
The winterize your bicycle talk we did down at the Main Library (ed. note: Not Skillman! My bad!) was really productive. Both Jack and Joe got to have a wonderful discussion with folks ranging from some of our long-time volunteers to people interested in extending their riding season even just a little bit. We’ve had a lot of interest from folks coming into the shop and even out on the street approaching our staff about tips for winter bicycling, so keep your eyes peeled for a date, time and place in the near future for a winter bicycling workshop.
Over in the Bicycle Politics forum, there is an interesting conversation brewing regarding the Women and Transgender Night text that Angie wrote up awhile back. If that type of discussion is your cup of coffee, check it out and see what’s been said. Andrea from Fayetteville, AR’s Bike City Recyclery has some spirited comments, and a number of folks have commented on the discussion to us outside of the information superhighway. Maybe we could have some more physical venues for this type of discussion? Respectful and productive comments are always welcome!
Joe and Jack recently attended the Mid-American Trails and Greenways Conference and wow are there some exciting things going on there. If you want to hear more about some of the things they took away from the conference, you should come to…
Historic Second Baptist Church, 441 Monroe, Detroit, from 5:30-8:00pm (Thursday/Tonight!) to learn more about some really rad projects regarding the Detroit area, including the U.S. Bicycle Route System and Underground Railroad Bicycle Trail!
In other event news, on November 4th there is the 2nd WSU Drop Your Drive event, we’d love to see any WSU types out there, we’ll be there talking with folks about our programming and the things we do! It’s from 11am-2pm in the South Commons of the Student Center. Did you know that we participate in the show your OneCard and Save program?!
Hey, what are some bike related things you’d like to do in the winter time? Indoor/outdoor/combination of the two, we’d love to hear what you would do during the winter time to stay active. We’ve got a few ideas here and there, but we’re crazy. We want to know what you think. Comment here or feel free to drop us a line: program@thehubofdetroit.org
