Adult Mechanic Class – Sundays @ 2pm

As part of our commitment to provide the knowledge we have to our community, we hold weekly Adult Mechanics Classes on Sundays from 2-4pm (and on Fridays from 6pm-8pm in the summer) in our Back Alley Bikes community workshop space.
We ask that you show up on time to class as it is a disruption to the learning process for folks to show up late.  To reduce distractions, the door will be shut 30 minutes after class starts.

Each week a different topic is discussed in the class, so coming consistently will pay off quick, but drop ins are welcome.  Please see the calendar on the left of our webpage to see what this week’s topics will be.

The Adult Mechanics Class curriculum consists of an ongoing, fixed rotation of five classes:

  • Flat Fixing, Drivetrain, Wheel Truth ->
  • Brakes ->
  • Shifters ->
  • Bottom Brackets + Headsets ->
  • Hub Bearing Systems ->
  • Flat Fixing, Drivetrain, Wheel Truth -> (…you get the idea)

This class is for adults 17 years old and older.  No registration is necessary, but we ask that you show up on time to reduce disruptions to class.  The cost is donation based on whatever you are able to give (we suggest $10).  No one is turned away for lack of funds.
No need to bring a bike, we have bikes to practice on here.

If you have taken our class before please complete this survey to help us evaluate our program!

      It never ends. We offer the mechanics class every Sunday unless there is a holiday or some sort of emergency.

      To find out what subject we will be covering each Sunday, just use the calendar on this website located on the top left titled “Hub Calendar!”

    i c u have bike for use to practice on if i have a bike can i bring it will i have to bring my own supplies if i do?

      Hey Darius,
      I’m not sure what you mean by “supplies” but we have a workshop with six stands full of tools. So basically all the tools you need will be here at the shop. Also, six bikes is the maximum we can work on at once. So if 10 people show up to the class with their own bike, only 6 of those bikes are going to be worked on.
      Or if you mean “supplies” as in replacement parts, we have used parts here at the shop, but the class is meant to show you some basic repairs, not completely rebuild your bike.

      I hope that answers your questions. If not, please comment here again or send an email to jason (at) thehubofdetroit (dot) org.
