Things to know for this weekend (18/April/14)

Hey everyone, Here are a few things to point out about this weekend: Sunday’s Adult Mechanic Class is happening. So there is a Christian holiday this weekend. There are a lot of Christians in Detroit and our country, so chances are – a lot of you are celebrating Easter. Regardless, we’ll still be having class on Sunday. Come learn how to fix your brakes. 2pm-4pm. Siren Media Rocks. We had a group at MSU called Siren Media do their senior capstone project on Back Alley Bikes. They did a great job and gave us a bunch of tools to...

Youth Voices Needed!

Our friend Todd Scott tipped us off to an opportunity for the youth that come to our shop. So if you are one of our youth participants or a family member of, please consider the following information. Coming up (date TBA), Detroit City Council will be considering some ordinances that effect youth riding bicycles within the city. It is possible that a recommendation will be made to council to keep these ordinances. If you would like to speak in front of City Council regarding these ordinances, get in contact with us at Back Alley Bikes. The ordinances being considered...

Youth Bike Summit Experience by Ian Easton

So you read the post by Omari talking about his experience at the Youth Bike Summit. Up next is Ian. I spoke with Ian after he sent in his writing and he expressed that the Sunday visioning session to end the summit was the part that left the biggest impact on him (after meeting all of his new friends that is). Just like with Omari, I (jason) did some light editing and added some links and emphasis of things I found important. Without further ado, check out what Ian has to say. Youth Bike Summit 2014 Parsons New School...

Thanks Lainey & Fraser Bicycle!

Below you will see a wonderful piece of mail we received from one of our donors Lainey.  Last month I posted about Pedal for a Purpose put on by Fraser Bicycle. The event took place on March 8th and Lainey got a team together to ride for Back Alley Bikes. The team took turns riding for 12 hours and raised $1,005 for Back Alley Bikes. I asked Lainey how many miles the team rode and she didn’t remember. After riding for 12 hours collectively I can understand how that would happen. This isn’t Lainey’s first time helping us out...

Youth Bike Summit Experience by Omari Norman

You remember Omari? He sent in those photos to share from the Youth Bike Summit. Well Omari put some words to his experience as well. I (jason) did some light editing, added links and made some text bold that really stuck out to me. So the emphasis is mine, but the experience is all Omari’s. Check it out:         My Experience at the Youth Bike Summit in NYC by Omari Norman So my experience at the Youth Bike Summit was actually surprisingly fun. But I didn’t know what to expect in the first place anyway. I...

Online donations and 501(c)(3) update (12/March/14)

Hello everyone, It is that time of year when folks are doing their taxes and really thinking about money. As a non-profit we are always thinking about money. I wanted to address two things regarding Back Alley Bikes in this regard: online donations and our 501(c)(3) status. Online Donations First off – thank you to everyone that has donated to us online! In the first two months of 2014 alone we’ve raised over $5,000 online. This is a big deal this time of year being that the polar vortex doesn’t only stop people from biking, it freezing our lines...
