Bike of the Now: Hop Skip & Jump

Schwinn MTB Sidewinder, blue 41 cm mountain bike, 18 speed, 26” wheels, Kenda 1.95 tires, Shimano SIS derailleurs, Sun Race shifters, center pull brakes, quick release seat post, Schwinn saddle, bottle mount, $150. The Sidewinder was Schwinn’s first mountain bike. Mountain bikes are designed for off road antics: screaming down hills, bunny hopping over logs, smashing into trees & so forth. Back home it’s fun to jump off of curbs & go airborne from ramps, but don’t do it! We at the Hub strongly discourage this kind of reckless activity, because it’s dangerous & also very hard on your...

Things to know for this weekend (18/April/14)

Hey everyone, Here are a few things to point out about this weekend: Sunday’s Adult Mechanic Class is happening. So there is a Christian holiday this weekend. There are a lot of Christians in Detroit and our country, so chances are – a lot of you are celebrating Easter. Regardless, we’ll still be having class on Sunday. Come learn how to fix your brakes. 2pm-4pm. Siren Media Rocks. We had a group at MSU called Siren Media do their senior capstone project on Back Alley Bikes. They did a great job and gave us a bunch of tools to...

Bike of the Now: Premium Rush Edition

Unknown Manufacturer, 51 cm red/chrome aluminum diamond frame, single speed fixie, 700c X 28 steel wheels, Kenda 90 psi tires, side pull Tektro brakes, quick release seat post & front wheel, Origin 8 crank, kickstand, bottle mount. $175 A fixie is a fixed-gear bike, which means that if the back wheel is turning, the crank (& thus the pedals) are turning. Other bikes freewheel, so you can coast without pedaling. Track bikes are usually fixed-gear, but in recent years they have appeared on the street. We don’t sell many fixes at the Hub – they’re not for everyone. They...

Youth Voices Needed!

Our friend Todd Scott tipped us off to an opportunity for the youth that come to our shop. So if you are one of our youth participants or a family member of, please consider the following information. Coming up (date TBA), Detroit City Council will be considering some ordinances that effect youth riding bicycles within the city. It is possible that a recommendation will be made to council to keep these ordinances. If you would like to speak in front of City Council regarding these ordinances, get in contact with us at Back Alley Bikes. The ordinances being considered...

Youth Bike Summit Experience by Ian Easton

So you read the post by Omari talking about his experience at the Youth Bike Summit. Up next is Ian. I spoke with Ian after he sent in his writing and he expressed that the Sunday visioning session to end the summit was the part that left the biggest impact on him (after meeting all of his new friends that is). Just like with Omari, I (jason) did some light editing and added some links and emphasis of things I found important. Without further ado, check out what Ian has to say. Youth Bike Summit 2014 Parsons New School...

Thanks Lainey & Fraser Bicycle!

Below you will see a wonderful piece of mail we received from one of our donors Lainey.  Last month I posted about Pedal for a Purpose put on by Fraser Bicycle. The event took place on March 8th and Lainey got a team together to ride for Back Alley Bikes. The team took turns riding for 12 hours and raised $1,005 for Back Alley Bikes. I asked Lainey how many miles the team rode and she didn’t remember. After riding for 12 hours collectively I can understand how that would happen. This isn’t Lainey’s first time helping us out...
