Back Alley Bikes is Hiring

Hey everyone, If you are interested in one day having a dumb picture of you working with bikes posted on this website, this is your day. No, but seriously, we are looking for a few more folks to work for Back Alley Bikes. Of course you can always volunteer, but if you want to get paid to do this stuff, you will want to keep reading. Note that this is a job for Back Alley Bikes. We are looking for coordinators and teachers, not mechanics or salespeople like they were doing at The Hub earlier this year. Yeah, you...

120 Bikes And Counting

You may have noticed all the bikes on the floor in Jason’s recent photo-tour of our newly remodeled shop – we’ve never had so many. But those aren’t all. There are yet more upstairs. Just follow the mysterious sign, apparently lettered by Celtic elves – or perhaps that tagger who keeps hitting Tomboy Market,  in the back of the shop to see even more.   Our mechanics have been busy all winter rebuilding bikes & as of this week have over 120 ready to go – a record!. This is our seasonal peak. As spring approaches, sales pick up & that...

Bike Tech Returns on March 26th

Hey ya’ll, So I got some fresh information for you from the Back Alley Bikes office. We are excited to have partnered with the Detroit Public Library’s HYPE Teen Center over the past year to provide a program called Bike Tech. Bike Tech is a program for teens that takes place at the HYPE Teen Center located in the Main Branch of the Detroit Public Library on Tuesday afternoons from 4-6pm. Since December, the program has not been happening. I’m happy to announce that Bike Tech will be back on March 26th! The current plans are for the program...

Retail Shop Improvements (Feb/28/13)

Hey everyone, I’m here to introduce you to a whole new world. That world is the new and improved Hub of Detroit. I got plenty of pictures which you love. I’m also saying goodbye to updates on The Hub. What that means is that I (Jason) will only be updating you on Back Alley Bikes doings while The Hub will have James dedicated to updating you on the doings of the retail shop. This means more news since one person doesn’t have to be divided between two spaces. So while you’ve grown to love our website, you now have...

Bikes of the Now – Yellow Edition

We have a lot of newly rebuilt bikes available right now – our mechanics have been stockpiling bikes all winter. Darrin, having completely remodeled the shop to gain more floorspace, is seen here plotting how to cram still more bikes in there.   Over at Bikes of the Now we’re highlighting a couple of yellow Schwinns:   Previously featured bikes that were sold have been moved to Bikes of the Then, where you can admire them through bitter tears of regret. If only I had grabbed that Burning Orange Fuji Special Tourer when I had the chance!

Youth Bike Summit Quick Hit (22/Feb/13)

Hey ya’ll, It is a tough day out there. I don’t have a lot of time as my bike ride to the hardware store this morning took much longer than I expected. It isn’t easy to ride though that much snow, but I made it! So for those naysayers, I DID ride my bike today in Detroit. For those of you that feel as if you could never do that, I must admit that I did walk my bike a good amount as well this morning! Anyway, not much time so I’m gonna shut up about today and tell...

Youth Bike Summit We Go! (13/Feb/13)

Alright ya’ll, I have something very exciting to talk about. I’ve probably mentioned it before, but this weekend Heather, Sarai, Trevon and myself will be headed to New York City for the third Youth Bike Summit put on by Recycle-a-Bicycle. Okay, that was a big sentence if you aren’t in our little isolated bike world, so lets break this down to tell you who all the players are: 1) Heather: Volunteer coordinator, Mechanic-in-Training instructor, Adult Mechanic Class teacher, donations coordinator…Heather does so many things and is 1/2 of the Back Alley Bikes staff team. 2) Sarai: River Rouge High...

The Hub of Detroit is hiring!

Hey ya’ll, Word has hit us that you think our shop is really cool. Thank you, we appreciate it. We’ve also heard that if you get a job here that suddenly you become as hip as Shayne O’Keefe. That might be a stretch being that Shayne is Detroit’s premier hip cycling, rock ‘n rolling, vegan but I’m sure you could try and a job at The Hub might help you.** So back to being serious… The Hub of Detroit IS HIRING RIGHT NOW! What are we looking for at The Hub? Well Darrin didn’t send me a job description,...
