Support Needed

Hey ya’ll, So, the polar vortex has come and lucky for us, is on its way out. An Ethernet cord that supplied Back Alley Bikes with internet (and out phone) went from The Hub, outside our building and back into our BAB offices. It has been hanging out there for about 5 years now. Turns out you shouldn’t run those cords outside. It totally died. So Back Alley Bikes is currently without a phone. Work with us as we fix our internet situation. Everything is still working at The Hub, so still call them if you need. We are hoping...

2013 in Review

2013 in Review

I’m getting to be that age when I think of something that happened in the past and I have trouble placing exactly what year it happened in. I’ve got a pretty good picture of 2013 at Back Alley Bikes though. This post is going to be a longer one as I recap all that we’ve done this year (and how you can help us continue our work into 2014!). So here is the story of how we got 472 youth on bicycles this year (and other assorted tales). First Bike the Blizzard The beginning of 2013 brought a new...

Art for Sale!!!

Art for Sale!!!

As you may know, we had a really great time on Noel Night. Part of the party was an art auction. This was our first time throwing such an event. With that said it was a huge success, but next year we plan to do a little better. What I’m trying to say is that we ended up with art not sold. Now, as you will see below, this has nothing to do with the quality of art, but more the fact that we’ve never done this before. Also, maybe you weren’t at our shop on Noel Night or...

2014 Calendars

So I’ve heard that a lot of folks get excited for a holiday called Christmas. It is a christian holiday that a bunch of other people celebrate because they figure that eating a bunch of food and getting gifts sounds like a good idea no matter what their religious beliefs are. Or at least that is what I’ve heard. There is another holiday coming up called New Years. It corresponds with a new year starting (according to the Gregorian Calendar), hence the name. Now different folks have different new years. For example, Jewish folks beat us to the punch...

Holiday Closings for December

December 15, 2013
By

Hey everyone, December marks the end of the calendar year and the beginning of winter. With the winter solstice occurring, there are plenty of pagan holidays to appropriate and so we get the “holiday season” going on. Because of this, we have some closings. Back Alley Bikes will be closed for programming: December 22nd-January 1st. So from the Sunday before xmas to new years day we won’t be having any programming. We’ll return on January 2nd with youth volunteer time. The Hub of Detroit retail shop will be closed: December 24th-27th opening back up for regular business hours on...

Noel Night Recap (w/ photos from the photo booth!)

Hello Everyone, Wow, the end of the year is upon us and my mind is spinning. I won’t give you the full run down of everything yet – I’ll write an end up the year update at the end of the month, but we were at our busiest this year! I know I say that every year, but in October when our youth programs traditionally slow down we increased them. Not only did we start a new program, but we also saw a 185% increase in the number of youth coming to our Saturday program. When things usually slow...

Hey Everyone,If you missed our winter biking class on December 1st, don’t worry – the information is at your fingertips! But instead of writing out everything we talked about during the class, I’m just going to send you to the blog of our friend Patrick. Patrick has been riding year round for a while and definitely knows what he is talking about. Patrick works over at Earthworks Urban Farm and got the bike program started there as well. He also volunteered at Back Alley Bikes years ago. Credentials, hes got them. If you missed that link the first time...
