Just to be silly

Sometimes you just need to add a post to the website to be silly. Here is an animated gif of Heather and I at Tour de Troit. I regret not putting on makeup that morning, but we got there before the sun got up. It was early okay? However, can you tell we love Tour de Troit? Cause we do. Hope you’re having a silly day! <3 Back Alley Bikes <3

Bike of the Now: Equal Size Wheels!

Bianchi Limited 1983, Eggplant, 58 cm lugged Ishiwata O22 CrMo diamond frame, 12 speed, 700C wheel, SunTour Cyclone Mark-II, Dia Compe 500 side pull brakes, quick release fore & aft, Aero saddle, bottle mount. $400 Here is a great example of Bianchi’s innovative architecture,  which has been catching on with more & more bike manufacturers in the last 125 years: the wheels are of equal radius, & both are supported by pneumatic tires. They’re actually inflated with compressed air!  Edoardo Bianchi introduced equal sized wheels with pneumatic tires in the 1880s, & now: boom, 125 years later it’s really catching...

Bike the Blizzard Cometh

Hey Ya’ll,So this won’t be the last time you hear about this, but let me get this out there now. Bike the Blizzard is coming. What is Bike the Blizzard? Well, it is a fundraising Bike-a-Thon to benefit Back Alley Bikes that is a whole ton of fun. You see, this will be our second year of choosing a Sunday in January and riding as many miles as we can to raise some funds. There is no rain date, there is no snow date…there is only January 26th, 2014. I guess I should back up a little bit with...

Bike of the Now: Post Apocalyptic Edition

Ross Europa, blue, single speed, 50 cm, new 26″ tires, coaster brake, banana seat, riser bars. $115 Suppose the  government shutdown goes on indefinitely, metastasizing into a deadlock on the debt ceiling, resulting in a default on payments owed by the United States, triggering a wave of defaults & an new global recession. Markets collapse, trade comes to a standstill, unemployment soars. Our government, unable to summon the political will to manage basic infrastructure maintenance, watches the national highway system decay into hundreds of fragments managed by local militia. When civil order breaks down & the fuel supply is spotty...

Skillshare with Darrin Brouhard

October 10, 2013
By

There is a saying at The Hub of Detroit. That saying is “Bro hard or bro home!” Actually, we don’t say that at all because it would be dumb. It is really just a way to make fun of Darrin Brouhard’s last name (pronounced bro-hard). Darrin has been working at the retail shop for a few years and has been the general manager for most of those years. Darrin is also a maker of things. He is partnering with The Detroit Mercantile Co. and Carhartt to provide a skill-share about making DIY bike panniers. Now you may have seen...

CALL FOR ARTISTS!!!

Hey ya’ll, So some of you have heard of us talking about an art auction for a while. This is a fund raiser that used to happen around here years ago and disappeared for a bit. We’ve finally pulled it together to bring this back. We worked it out that our Art Auction will be the same night as Noel Night here in the Cass Corridor. But first we need artists to donate some art! We are asking for bike themed pieces of any medium or size. It can be bike photography or a sculpture made out of old...

Hal Williams

Hal Williams

Hey everyone, Though he wasn’t affiliated with Back Alley Bikes, I know that Hal Williams was known at The Hub of Detroit and with many riders in the city. So I’m sorry I have to share the bad news of his murder. There is an article over at Mode Shift talking about why he was so well known. I personally didn’t know Hal, but from reading about him I can take away from his story that I need to ride more, be alive and enjoy life. Take care of each other out there. This includes folks that drive automobiles....

Bike of the Far Future As Seen From the Distant Past

J.C. Higgins, copper 48.5cm lugged cantilever frame, 3 speed internal hub, 26″ wheels, sidepull brakes, chrome fenders, chrome chain guard, chrome racks front & back, kickstand. $400 Oh baby, there is just so much to love about this exuberantly retro-futuristic beauty. Consider all the bright & unspoiled chrome; if you come in the shop, ask Pleas, who’s working the counter, to point out the curlicue at the back of the back rack & the Buck Rogers angles of the chain guard & other details. Notice the checker pattern on the seat tube, & the graceful swoop of the cantilever...

Get Along

September 25, 2013

I’ve got this new habit of using Twitter and Facebook. Mostly because I need to figure out how to use it. I guess it is thing that people do (I never really knew why everyone was staring at their phones all the time!). I guess other people use these things as well and it helps me keep up with other bike groups in the city. Today, it brought me some bad news and now I’m on our website wondering out loud where to go with this information. Last night an eight year old child was murdered by an automobile....

Brand New Program Starting Next Month!!!

Hey everyone, Back Alley Bikes is super excited to announce a brand new program. We are able to start this new effort by scaling back one of our existing programs. I know, scaling back on something never sounds good, so let me explain… Right in our mission we put youth development. We are really into that concept here with a vast majority of our programs being geared toward youth. Our youth earn-a-bike program educates youth on bicycle mechanics and empowers them to build their own bicycle. The youth ride club demonstrates that bicycles can be for transportation as well...
