Hey I found a bunch of old photos!

So the first thing I am going to say is that you should totally come to our Movie Night Fundraiser tomorrow night.  See ya there. Alright, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, we can move on.  I was cleaning out my desk today and found a CD titled “Wolf’s Photos BAB”.  It was a CD full of old photos from Back Alley Bikes.  I’m guessing the photos are from around 2006 but I’m not sure. If you go to our MEDIA section you will see a link to our PICASA page which has many of our...

Rob Pelkey Fundraiser on Sunday (9/Dec/12)

Hey Ya’ll, I know that we’ve been bothering you all the time to shake loose any funds you have here.  We’ve got our events coming up we are looking to make successful, but I recently got word about an event this weekend that is very important. You see, Rob recently had some heart problems that put him in the hospital.  You know Rob.  Really, you do.  If you’ve biked in the city you’ve probably seen him or had him fix your flat before.  I’ve seen him at all of the group rides I’ve gone on.  Rob also works at...

400+ and still counting!!!!

Hey everyone, I write to you bearing great news.  Last year in 2011 we were able to get 322 kids on bikes through our Youth Earn-a-Bike and Youth Bike Give-a-Way programs.  We thought we really really cool.  I wanted to top that this year and I wasn’t sure if that was going to happen… WELL WE TOTALLY DID IT!!! You see, this week we passed 400 in our count of bikes going out to youth.  The best part is that we still have a month to go.  Youth Earn-a-Bike has slowed down some being that it is getting colder...

Welcome back, here are some cute pictures!

Hey Ya’ll, So Back Alley Bikes took a little bit of a vacation.  Heather and I (jason) decided to take a long weekend after the holiday to hang out with family and re-energize.  I returned to work today and found a great email containing photos of kids with their new bicycles! You see, on Friday, November 16th I went out to the Academy of Americas Elementary School in South West Detroit with one of our volunteers, Tim.  While we were helping kids pick out bikes and adjust their seat post heights, the Academy counselor Sylvia LaPan was helping corral...

Bikes of the Floor, Cornucopia Edition

This is a great time of year to pick up a bike, because our inventory is growing in anticipation of spring. So you have many choices whatever your biking style or budget. A few of those choices are as usual highlighted in Bikes of the Now, but you can see them all if you come on down to the shop.

Hey everyone, Do you think genocide isn’t a laughing matter?  Not even on Halloween?  Neither do we.  And every year we are reminded that the Thanksgiving ‘story’ didn’t really go like they taught you in school.  However, this is still a time when most stores are closed and families want to hang out.  So we are having some closings this week. Check it: Back Alley Bikes will be closed: Wed, Nov. 21st: No volunteer time Thurs, Nov. 22nd: No volunteer time Sat., Nov. 24th: No Youth Earn-a-Bike Sun., Nov. 25th: No Adult Mechanic Class The Hub of Detroit will...

Dinner and Movies night

I tend to make events based off what I like.  Luckily, I share some things I like with other folks.  In the past I’ve done a Progressive Dinner by Bicycle Ride Fundraiser.  Turns out that riding bikes and eating food is a win-win situation that everyone likes.  So I’m combining those things a with a twist. How about eating dinner and then watching movies about biking?  Yeah?  Sounds good to me too.  Here is how it is going to work: Date: Friday, December 14th Location: OmniCorp Detroit, 1501 Division St, Detroit (in Eastern Market) Time: 6:30pm dinner is served,...

Bikes of the Now: Lugs, Twins & Bargains Edition

Lately we’ve been talking a lot about our Pro-Built line of rebuilt bicycles, which our mechanics are justifiably proud of. Each Pro-Built bike is rebuilt from the frame up with all new & especially reliable components, producing a durable commuting machine. Several of these are highlighted in Bikes of the Now, including this week’s newest entry: a matched pair of Shoguns, one a diamond frame, the other a mixte. There are others on our shop floor. But let’s not forget that we have bikes for a range of budgets. Right now we have 10 quite different bikes in the neighborhood...
