Volunteer Membership

Back Alley Bikes has thanked it’s volunteers for a long time for their support and hard work by offering up a shop membership/benefits package in return for regular, conscientious volunteer support. For those folks, we recognize their contributions by offering Allyship if they volunteer for 15 hours every 4 months (about 45 hours a year, or ~3 hours a month). We have the trimester system in place to reflect the seasonality of volunteers, as the population ebbs and flows according to the seasons and the school year. The cut off dates (the time by which you must have 15 hours in after initially gaining your benefits, in order to keep them) are January 1st, May 1st, and September 1st. Ally benefits kick in as soon as the initial 15 hour requirement is met, and include a 20% discount on used bikes and new parts & accessories in The Hub of Detroit (excluding labor), access to “Ally Time” as scheduled in the Back Alley Bikes workshop, as well as free used parts during open shop hours at Back Alley Bikes. All Parts must be approved by a Back Alley Bikes staff person, and recorded. Some parts may be denied due to shortages or for any other reason. Free used parts do not include anything in the scrap pile, or anything currently on a bike. No bike should be stripped of any part without prior staff approval.

We also recognize that in our community, there are folks who want to support us, and gain the recognition or benefits of regular, intentional support, but who can’t volunteer for a variety of reasons. So this year we’re going to start offering Allyship to folks on a yearly, sustaining membership basis, for the once-yearly fee of $175. That’s only $15 a month!

Benefits of the Ally Sustaining Membership include a 20% discount on bikes and new merchandise in the Hub of Detroit Retail Shop (excludes labor), access to “Ally Time” as scheduled in the Back Alley Bikes workshop, as well as free used parts (up to $200 in value) during open shop hours at Back Alley Bikes. All parts must be approved by a Back Alley Bikes staff person, and recorded. Some parts may be denied due to shortages or for any other reason. Free used parts do not include anything in the scrap pile, or anything currently on a bike. No bike should be stripped of any part without prior staff approval. You must purchase your membership before use, and it is valid for one year from the date of receipt of your membership card, which can be mailed to you or picked up at either Back Alley Bikes or The Hub of Detroit after purchase.
