Back Alley Bikes began out of the Detroit Summer program because of a need in the community and the resources that already were here. As our structure has changed we have opened our retail shop in a similar way. The need and resources were already here to meet each other. There was no large profit margin business plan.
Along side our retail shop, we continue to provide (free of charge or by donation) the knowledge that our mechanics are paid to use. Though we have a retail shop, educating the cycling community in Detroit and enhancing the knowledge base that is already there is a priority of ours.
When we can, we have and will share our resources with partnering groups outside of our immediate Cass Corridor neighborhood. In a city of poor mass transit and segregated neighborhoods, we hope that bikes can bring us together.
