In an increasingly digitized world we offer youth an opportunity to come face to face with each other through physical work. A return to learning these manual skills gives immediate feedback: a working bike. In the long run, as youth interact with each other successfully in our workshop, they will grow to join the many adults in Detroit that are using their manual skills to build and sustain communities. By empowering youth to make themselves mobile with their own hands they can also take responsibility for other parts of their lives.
Every year we hire some of our youth to work for us and most go on to teach their skills to others. So it isn’t a matter of youth being the leaders of tomorrow. It is a matter of youth leading today.
